Is it a screwdriver – or a hammer?

In Manchester [UK] they call a hammer a Liverpool screwdriver, in Liverpool they call a hammer a Manchester screwdriver. The implication on both sides is that the people in Liverpool or Manchester are botchers and don’t do the construction job properly.

I draw a comparison with the way that most organisations ‘botch’ their training by using the blunt instrument of external training courses for all development needs. Team development is much more effective when it is collaborative working that is being improved. Sending individuals on training for time management; project planning etc just increases the divides in the team when they come back and struggle to implement what they have learned.  I guess they feel they have been hit with a hammer!
